We all know what the reason for visiting this part of the world is for. The allure of the bushveld is akin to the jungles of South America or India. Here where trumpeting elephants, roaring lions and the thunder of buffalo are not just the stuff of legends. Stories of hunters, tradesmen, explorers, chiefs, and mighty warriors fill this land and the ground still holds the colour of their blood.
Every guest of this area comes to experience the presence of the animals. To learn about their secret ways and drive through the bushveld to get a sense of this wild land which we have worked so hard to preserve. Stand on the edge of cliffs or take a moment in the shade of ancient trees as you absorb the majesty of this place.
Adventuring in South Africa is a thousand experiences in one. It is vibrant and beautiful and full of history culture. From the west coast to the east, from the desert to the mountains, from biome to biome, people to people and forest to field South Africa has more to offer than you could ever believe.
So join us for a few days and tour this wonderful area as you begin your African Adventure.
South Africa, and the rest of the continent for that matter, is known for it's stunning sunrises and sunsets. Finding a sunset spot is a famous activity (solely because most people that get to enjoy the sunrise are working in the industries that help this entire tourism machine operate) and is the first thing to be enjoyed every day. However if one is going to enjoy the movements of the sun then start with the sunrise.
There beautiful company that we work with that provides you with the most magnificent view of the sunrise: from the air. Float at eye level with the top of the glorious Mariepskop mountain face as the sun crawls over the horizon. The colours fill the sky, the light burns away yesterday and the face of the mountain is refreshed with a watercolour scene.
You'll never know a true sunrise until you've seen the first glance of the sun before anyone else. The same way that the proud mountain face has watched it for millennia.
Safaris game drives of course! Game drives through big 5 nature reserves are of course the breakfast, lunch and dinner of this area. Game drives offer you the opportunity to observe wildlife from a position of safety in the hands of experienced guides.
At the end of the day what you would call a form of entertainment is a lifestyle for us. We at Sable Tours understand that you seek the unabridged experience: the love we share for the animals, the respect and understanding we have developed, at times even heartbreak as we watch populations deteriorate at the hands of our own species.
Animals live wild here, as close as we can manage to their manners of life thousands of years ago. They're protected and held back from the bustle of city life hundreds of kilometres away. Climbing into a vehicle before the crack of dawn with a blanket wrapped around you and a hot flask of coffee, still as the trees whilst birds sing in choirs around you, is the best way to experience the wild bushveld. The same bush that lions and leopard, elephant and buffalo, dung beetles and anteaters all creep around, hiding from predators when they themselves seek out their prey.
The lowveld is a remnant of the ancient times where you can forget the rat race you've left behind and crawl around at the same pace as the animals, a giant beetle yourself, purring around every corner as the animals which have become used to the game vehicles go on about their daily lives.
One of the most extraordinary experiences you can have in the Greater Kruger are is a visit to one of the rehabilitation centres. Animals get hurt all the time in the bush. Humans are cruel and they kill, poison and trap many of the extraordinary creatures in these ecosystems often without prejudice. There are a number of organizations that do everything they can to bring the animals that can still be helped back to life.
There are a number of these extraordinary persons and if you have the chance you should visit them all:
The Cape Vulture Conservancy focuses on vultures as the name suggests. Vultures are renowned, as many hunted species are, by the traditional healing practitioners who value them for their ability to fly high which they believe can in turn give them the ability of foresight. The property is an impressive 1800 hectares and is home to over 650 breeding pairs of vultures providing a haven for the various species to grow their population.
The Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre is located just outside the shadow of the mountain range. They deal with all sorts of animals from big to small. They often deal with orphaned rhino calves, poisoned owls and eagles, and of course their honey badger ambassador Stoffel is quite impressive. They've been running student volunteer programs since 1998 and along with rehabilitation they focus in a huge fashion on teaching guests as much as they can.
The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre also known as HESC started out as a cheetah sanctuary. Their amazing efforts have helped increase the big cat's populations resurge after years of poaching this beautiful creature. They also deal with large rhinos, servals, leopards, cranes and many other. Their specialization makes them the go to authority on many creatures and gives them power to exhibit these extraordinary creatures without taming them.
The Elephant-Moments Experience is a unique and humbling experience where guests can have close up experiences with elephants. The journey started in 1997 when a small elephant calf was saved, growing up in such close proximity it learned that it's handlers were no danger to him and kept returning. At first only himself but soon after with other elephants and the handlers have developed very personal relationships with these extraordinary creatures. This tour is an opportunity for some of the best elephant handlers in Africa to introduce you the the largest land mammal in the world.
Going on Safari is as safe as it can be. You will be briefed on expected be haiviour, do's and dont's so that the animals are not made aware of your presence. The animas on estates where game viewing is permitted are used to the sound and shape of the game drive vehicle.
Children under certain ages will be restricted from certain activities for safety purposes. However if a parent can guarantee that the child has been exposed to dangerous or frightening experiences before and remained calm guides may be willing to make exceptions. Remember, food screams in fright in the bush.
Contact your doctor. The lowveld has been known for malaria outbreaks. Many locals have a natural resilience to it but foreigners will not. Keep in mind gin and tonics, lots of spicey food, rubbing citronella oil on yourself and a dozen other prevantative measures will help stop you from getting bitten but you will get bit even if malaria is unlikely. Africa was and still is a dangerous continent.
